What
is Section 508?
Section 508 of the
U.S. Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998 requires that Federal
agencies ensure that disabled employees and members of the
public have access to information, computers, and networks
comparable to access enjoyed by people without disabilities.

A
Call for Action
Of the 50,000 - 75,000 books published each year, less than
three percent are available to the blind and each book takes
an average of six months to get to market. A book published
with large type can cost a few hundred dollars - in Braille,
several thousand dollars. School textbooks in Braille are
almost non-existent. Printing to Braille has proven to be
a financially unfeasible solution to Section 508/ADA compliance
that at best covers less than ten percent of the visually
impaired population that actually read Braille. End user costs
for various digital talking book reading machines run $2,795
- $3,500 in addition to screen reading software which costs
$800-$1,300 per computer.
