Workspace Overview


Using SALT Objects


Object Overview

Dreamweaver's Insert Menu is shown by selecting Window->Insert from the toolbar menu. The Insert Menu has a number of default choices to choose from when creating your Web page. The scope of this documentation is how SALT can be used to add speech to existing Web pages and not how to create Web pages using Dreamweaver. Figure 1 shows the Dreamweaver Insert Menu with the Voice Web Studio SALT objects installed.

Speech Prompt Create Speech Prompts
Used to insert a prompt in the page for the computer to play text-to-speech or an audio file. There is no limit as to the number of prompts that can be in a page. Highlight HTML or text to play or type the contents of the prompt to be played. The inserted prompt will not activate unless instructed to by a dialog object or command.
Listen for Speech Listening for Speech Input
Used to insert a listen element in the page to listen for the speech input from a microphone. There is no limit as to the number of listen objects that can be in a page. The inserted listen objects will not activate unless instructed to by a dialog object or command.
Create Dialogs

Create Dialogs
Used to build a conversation or human-computer dialog that will both play audio and listen for speech input using the speech elements on the Web page. Only three dialogs can be created at once. However, there is no limit as to the number of dialogs that can be within a page.

Play Dialog Playing Multimodal Content
Used to select a dialog to activate in a multimodal setting such as clicking a textbox, mouse over an image, using the keyboard to focus in on a selection, pressing a button to play tts and recognize speech, selecting an image map area and playing a audio description, etc... There is no limit as to the number of dialogs or multimodal interactions you can create.

Working with Commands


Commands Overview

Dreamweaver's Commands menu is shown by selecting Commands from the toolbar menu. The Commands Menu is where Dreamweaver is directed to Speech Activate the page. The scope of this documentation is how SALT can be used to add speech to existing Web pages and not how to create Web pages using Dreamweaver. Figure 2 shows the Dreamweaver Commands Menu with the Voice Web Studio Commands installed.

Speech Activate
(required)
Used to automatically insert the required speech activation components for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+ and play dialogs, prompts or listen for user input upon page load. This command must be used in order to execute any dialogs, prompts or listen elements on the page.

Detecting the SALT Browser


Behaviors Overview

Dreamweaver's Behavior Menu is shown by selecting Window->Behaviors from the toolbar menu. The Behavior Menu is where Dreamweaver can insert Voice Web Studio code to detect if the browser supports multimodal interaction. Figure 3 shows the Dreamweaver Behavior Menu with the Voice Web Studio SALT Browser Detection Behavior installed.

Used to redirect the multimodal browser to the speech-enabled page if available. The behavior includes page redirection for wireless multimodal browsers for handheld devices as well as desktop multimodal browsers such as the one included with Voice Web Studio. After selecting which browser to detect upon loading the page, browse for the file to redirect or type the url. Voice Web Studio will automatically perform the redirection before any other page actions or scripts are executed.

Editing using Property Inspectors


Property Inspector Overview

Dreamweaver's Property Inspectors are shown by selecting a prompt or a listen object on the Web page. Property Inspectors are tools for editing the speech elements on the Web page. The scope of this documentation is how SALT can be used to add speech to existing Web pages and not how to create Web pages using Dreamweaver. Figure 4 & 5 show the Dreamweaver Property Inspectors with the Voice Web Studio SALT Property Inspectors installed.

Speech Prompt Property Inspector

Used to modify the prompt SALT attributes and to edit contents of the prompt. The prompt Property Inspector also includes an events window for modifying prompt attributes such as onbargein, onerror, oncomplete, and onbookmark. These events can only be modified from the Prompt Property Inspector.

Listen Property Inspector


Used to modify the listen SALT attributes and to edit contents of the grammar and bind elements. The Listen Property Inspector also includes an events window for modifying listen attributes such as initialtimeout, babbletimeout, maxtimeout endsilence and mode. These events can only be modified from the Listen Property Inspector.

Selecting Speech Elements


Speech Elements Overview

Voice Web Studio's visual Speech Elements are shown in Dreamweaver by selecting a prompt box or a listen element on the Web page. Speech Elements can be selected by clicking on them with the mouse while developing the Web page. Figure 6 & 7 show Voice Web Studio's visual Speech Elements on a page loaded within Dreamweaver. Any SALT page will show Speech Elements on the page when opened.

Used to visually show the prompt added on the Web page. The prompt can be selected by a mouse click upon the prompt box as shown in figure 6. Upon selecting the prompt the property inspector will change to show the Speech Prompt Property Inspector. Edit the prompt using the Speech Prompt Property Inspector or by selecting the code view icon code view icon and then <salt:prompt>.

Listen Element

Used to visually show the listen element added on the Web page. The listen element can be selected by a mouse click upon the listen icon as shown in figure 7. Upon selecting the listen icon the property inspector will change to show the Listen Element Property Inspector. Edit the listen element's properties using the Listen Element Property Inspector or by selecting the code view icon code view icon and then <salt:listen>.

Standard Drop Down List

Default
Deselects the speech element and/or clears it's value.

Dialog
Select the Speech Dialog from the list to start or stop in playback.

salt:Prompt
Select the Speech Prompt Element from the list to start or stop in playback.

salt:Listen
Select the Listen for Speech Element from the list to start or stop in playback or activate or deactivate while listing for other listen elements.
